Description of workshop:

“Self-Protective Practices for High-Risk Clinical Cases”

In this age of increasing litigation, clinicians are frequently drawn into the legal battles of their clients through subpoenas for records, depositions and/or trial testimony.  Additionally, clinicians may find themselves treating high-risk clients who present many risks for DORA grievances (e.g., demands for their records; suicide ideation or attempts; violence against others; etc.)

Deb’s focus in her mental health trainings is to help therapists practice in a more self-protective manner, especially with high-risk cases that involve clients’ demands for records or high-risk behavior and/or legal involvement.  Such self-protective practices do not detract from clinical excellence, but rather will augment your work with clients.

Deb presents not only the necessary legal aspects in her trainings, but also incorporates clinical strategies gleaned from her extensive experience as a private practitioner (LCSW) and an instructor at Tulane University School of Social Work and Denver University Graduate School of Social Work.  Deb skillfully blends her clinical experience with her legal knowledge of defending mental health professionals in licensing board complaints/grievances. Deb includes numerous case examples in her workshops from her years of mental health defense situations.

About the Presenter:

Deborah (Deb) Henson is a LCSW (Tulane School of Social Work, MSW) and lawyer in private practice in Louisiana and Colorado, specializing in mental health law and licensing defense. She represents clinicians and lawyers in licensing board complaints and consults with practitioners to help them avoid such complaints. Deb meets with clinicians regularly to assist them upon receipt of subpoenas or to develop clinical strategies for risk prevention with cases that are becoming anxiety-producing to the clinician. Deb previously maintained a clinical practice in Denver and New Orleans. She also taught in both Tulane University School of Social Work and the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work as an Adjunct Faculty. Deb will be obtaining her LICSW in Massachusetts soon and will be opening a clinical private practice in Northampton, MA later this year.

Deb can be reached through her training web site: or her law and social work web site: She can also be emailed at or
